The off-season can be a difficult season for boats of all sizes and shapes if they are not properly stored and maintained. Learn how to optimize the longevity of your boat by properly caring for the boat and your gear. This article covers proper storage and maintenance so you can use your boat without issues throughout the season.

Seasonal Maintenance

Each season throughout the year brings different challenges for your boat, and different needs.

Spring

This is the time of year where most boat owners look to get back on the water after the winter. When removing your boat from storage you should do a close inspection of the hull for any cracks, dents or other damage. Then fully inspect the inside for any damage to the upholstery, or wiring. Then proceed to reattach any parts that were removed for storage and give it a quick wash to remove any dust.

Summer

As you begin to use your boat frequently you should do some regular monitoring of the motor, bilge and pump, and electronics. You should make sure to clean the live well properly after each use, and wash any salt water off the boat immediately. During the summer season you should also check for any corrosion, especially around the joints and where metal meets aluminium.

Fall

The Fall is when use of the boat begins to decline again, this is the perfect time to flush the engine and motor cooling system. It is also a great time to do the annual service, with full oil change, belt inspection, checking the water drainage system and all electronics. Finally, you should prepare for winterization.

Winter

Proper winterization is crucial to protect your engine while the boat is not in use, especially in areas that go below freezing. Always fill the tank to 95% capacity through the winter. Use fresh fuel and a stabilizer, this will keep the fuel from going bad before the Spring. Make sure to also fully drain water, or add the right amount of antifreeze to prevent pipes bursting, and other freeze damage.

Common Maintenance Mistakes

From beginners to experienced boaters, these are some common maintenance mistakes that many experience.

Ignoring the Cooling System

It is always crucial to flush the cooling system with fresh water after any saltwater use, even small trips. The salt can quickly cause buildup and lead to overheating and engine damage. Additionally, replacing the water pump impellers every 2-3 years regardless of use hours can prevent severe engine issues.

Not Winterizing

Some areas do not experience below freezing temperatures during the winter months, which can lead to boat owners not winterizing their boats properly. However, incomplete winterization processes can lead to corrosion, fuel system problems and other damage. For beginners, booking a winterization appointment at your local marine mechanic is the best bet.

Not Performing Fuel System Maintenance

Fuel system maintenance is quite often an area that gets overlooked, however modern ethanol-blended fuels require more attention. This is due to the shorter shelf life and higher water absorption rate. Always make sure to use fuel stabilizers and change filters regularly to avoid system damage.

Storage

When storing your boat during the off-season, the first step is a good fitting, quality cover. This will provide ample protection for your boat, covering the upholstery, electronics and paint. Then, it is time to find the perfect place to park it. While you can store a boat outdoors with proper winterization, and a protective cover, inside is always the best option. The storage shed should have a proper roof and at least 3 walls to protect the vessel from rain, wind and snow. If you do not have suitable storage on your property, consider finding a reliable boat storage provider in your area. Boats stored indoors should also go through proper winterization and be covered.
